The amino acid requirements of the Jensen sarcoma in vitro.

A rout ine procedure for the cul t ivat ion of f reshly excised Walke r carc inosarcoma 256 cells in vitro was repor ted f rom this l abo ra to ry (12). According to this technic, the amino acid requirements of the Walke r t u m o r were determined. These were found to include not only the th i r teen amino acids and amides repor ted to be required by some o ther cell lines (1-4) bu t also asparagine. Fu r the r , when the amino acids in the subs t ra te were l imited to only those essential for growth and survival , glycine a n d / o r serine were found to be g rowth-s t imula to ry (13). In view of the fac t t h a t the W a l k e r t u m o r requi rements were different f r o m those repor ted for several o ther cell strains, a n u m b e r of o ther neop lasms were examined in this l abo ra to ry wi th respect to the i r nu t r i t ive requirements . The present studies were designed to determine the essential i ty of amino acids for the Jensen sarcoma in vitro.
